By the end you can estimate the file size of a bitmap image from its image resolution and colour depth, and give it in whatever unit the question asks for.
A bitmap is pixels, and every pixel costs the same number of bits. So the file size is just how many pixels × bits per pixel.
Once you see that, it's a two-line calculation, and you'll know exactly why photos gobble your phone's storage.
Width and height are in pixels; colour depth is in bits. Then convert:
| To get | Do this to the bits |
|---|---|
| bytes | ÷ 8 |
| KiB | ÷ 8, then ÷ 1024 |
| MiB | ÷ 8, then ÷ 1024, then ÷ 1024 |
It's an estimate because the real file also holds the header. That's tiny next to the pixel data, so ignore it unless the question gives you its size.
Worked example: A 24-bit image, no calculator
Estimate the file size of a 1024 × 768 image with a colour depth of 24 bits. Give your answer in KiB and in MiB.
