By the end you can describe what memory management and file management involve, and explain why each is needed.
RAM is finite and shared. Memory management is the OS deciding which process gets which part of memory, for how long, and making sure no process strays outside its own area.
The tasks:
Without this, two programs would be handed the same address and both would crash.
Worked example: Worked example: allocating and freeing blocks
RAM has 16 blocks. The OS uses 2, a word processor uses 4, and a browser uses 3. Two blocks are used by a driver.
A game needs 5 blocks. Can it start?
File management is the OS organising everything stored on disk so that files can be found, opened, protected and deleted.
The tasks:
Every file has a directory entry, like a library catalogue card:
| Field | Example | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Name and extension | report.docx |
identifies the file and its type |
| Location | blocks 41–44 | where the data actually is |
| Size | 96 KB | tells the OS how much to read |
| Dates | created / modified | used for backups and sorting |
| Access rights | read-only for group B | security |
The user sees a friendly name; the OS uses the rest.
