By the end you can take a circle in expanded form, , and find its centre and radius by completing the square.
Quick reminder. A circle with centre and radius has equation
Why? A point is on the circle exactly when its distance from the centre is . The horizontal gap is and the vertical gap is , so Pythagoras gives (gap across)² + (gap up)² = . This centre–radius form lets you read the centre and radius straight off. Note the signs: means the centre has -coordinate .
Now expand and tidy up:
Same circle, but now the centre and radius are scrambled. This is the expanded form. Your job is to unscramble it back to centre–radius form: complete the square in , and separately in .
Remember the completing-the-square rule: . Halve the coefficient of for the bracket, then subtract that half squared.
Worked example: Unscrambling
Find the centre and radius of the circle .
