By the end you can compute the magnitude of any vector, construct a unit vector in the same direction, and distinguish between position vectors and displacement vectors.
The magnitude of a vector or is its length:
2D:
3D:
In i/j/k notation: .
Why Pythagoras works in 3D. Take . First stay on the floor: going 3 along and 4 along covers a floor distance of . Now go 12 straight up. "Floor distance" and "up" are at right angles, so use Pythagoras again: . Two right-angled triangles, one after the other, give the 3D formula.
The magnitude is a length, so it is never negative, and it is 0 only for the zero vector (no move at all).
Worked example: Example 1: magnitude in 2D and 3D
Find the magnitude of (a) , (b) .
