By the end you can find the acceleration, the resistance or the top speed of a vehicle moving up or down a hill, by combining with Newton's second law.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| mass of the vehicle, in kg | |
| power of the engine, in watts (convert kW by multiplying by 1000) | |
| the speed at the moment we are interested in, in | |
| the engine's driving force at that moment, | |
| the resistance to motion, opposing the direction the vehicle moves | |
| the angle of the slope to the horizontal | |
| the acceleration, in |
In the last lesson you saw that an engine working at power while moving at speed pushes with a driving force
On a slope, three forces act along the road:
Why ? Look at the diagram below. Split the weight into a part along the slope and a part pressing into it. The angle between the weight (straight down) and the line at right angles to the slope is , so the part along the slope is the side opposite that angle: . On a flat road and , so this force disappears, as it should.
(The other part of the weight, , presses into the road and is balanced by the road's push. It doesn't affect motion along the slope.)
Newton's second law says resultant force mass acceleration. Pick the direction of motion as positive, add up the forces along the slope with signs, and set the total equal to .
Going up the hill: the driving force is forwards (up), while the resistance and the weight component both point down the slope:
Going down the hill: now the weight component points the same way as the motion, so it helps. Only the resistance opposes:
If the engine is off (the car coasts), and the first term disappears.
Constant speed or top speed means , so the forces balance: put on the right-hand side.
Worked example: Finding the resistance at constant speed
A car of mass kg travels up a hill inclined at at a constant speed of . The engine's power is kW. Find the resistance to motion. Use .
Worked example: Acceleration going up a hill
A car of mass kg is travelling at up a hill inclined at . The engine's power is kW and the resistance is N. Find the acceleration at this instant. Use .
Worked example: Top speed up a hill
A car of mass kg has a maximum power of kW. It climbs a hill inclined at against a constant resistance of N. Find its greatest possible steady speed up the hill. Use .
Worked example: Coasting down a hill
A car of mass kg coasts down a hill inclined at with its engine off. The resistance is N. Find its acceleration. Use .
