By the end you can solve one-dimensional collision problems with conservation of momentum, using a sign convention for direction, whether the objects stick together or bounce apart.
The main symbols used in this lesson:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| mass of the first object | |
| initial velocity of the first object | |
| mass of the second object | |
| initial velocity of the second object | |
| final velocity of the first object | |
| final velocity of the second object | |
| initial velocity of object A | |
| initial velocity of object B | |
| final velocity of object A |
Two identical cars drive at each other at the same speed. What is their total momentum?
Zero. One momentum is , the other , and they cancel.
That's the whole trick of 1D momentum problems: along a line, a vector's direction is carried by its sign. Forget the sign and you get answers that are confidently, spectacularly wrong.
Worked example: Head-on, locked together
A car of mass travelling east at collides head-on with a van of mass travelling west at . They lock together. Find their velocity just after the collision.
