By the end you can explain what cloud computing is, tell a public cloud from a private cloud, and weigh up the benefits and drawbacks.
That joke is nearly right. When you save a file "to the cloud", it lands on real servers in a real data centre, owned by someone else and reached over the internet.
What makes it "cloud" is that you rent the storage or computing power on demand, pay for what you use, and never see or maintain the hardware.
Cloud computing
The delivery of computing services, such as storage, processing power and software, over the internet from remote servers, on demand, usually paid for according to use.
Public cloud
Cloud services offered by a third-party provider over the internet to the general public and many organisations, which share the provider's infrastructure.
Private cloud
Cloud infrastructure dedicated to a single organisation. It can be on the organisation's own premises or hosted by a third party, and only that organisation can use it.
