By the end you can explain how clock speed, number of cores, bus width, cache memory and processor type affect performance, and justify a choice of machine for a given task.
A computer performs well when it finishes work quickly — when instructions are carried out without the processor sitting idle waiting for memory.
Four factors decide most of that, and the syllabus names them:
| Factor | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Clock speed | How many cycles happen per second — the pace of everything |
| Number of cores | How many instruction streams can run at the same time |
| Bus width | How many bits move per transfer — the size of each delivery |
| Cache memory | How often the CPU has to wait for slow main memory |
| Processor type | How much work the design gets done per cycle |
Worked example: Two laptops, same price
Laptop A: 3.4 GHz, 2 cores, 2 MB cache. Laptop B: 2.8 GHz, 8 cores, 12 MB cache. Which is faster for editing video, and which for a single-threaded spreadsheet?
