By the end you can sketch , and shifted tan graphs, reading off the amplitude, period, range, key points and asymptotes, and work backwards from a graph to its constants.
Two words first:
Try it with numbers.
Every change to is a transformation you already know from the transformations lessons. Here they all are ( means the size of ignoring its sign):
| Graph | Transformation | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| stretch parallel to the -axis, factor | amplitude , range to | |
| stretch parallel to the -axis, factor | period (or ) | |
| translation up | centre line | |
| translation to the left | everything slides sideways | |
| reflection in the -axis | maxima become minima |
The same works for cos, and for tan (which has no amplitude, but stretches and shifts just the same).
