By the end you can derive for resistors in parallel using Kirchhoff's laws, and use it to find a combined resistance, a branch current or a p.d.
The main symbols used in this lesson:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| resistance of the first resistor | |
| current in the first branch | |
| resistance of the third resistor |
Two components are in parallel when they are connected across the same two points, so each one has its own separate path for charge.
Both of Kirchhoff's laws have something to say about this arrangement.
Connect two resistors and in parallel across a source of e.m.f. . Call the total current leaving the source .
For three or more resistors in parallel, extend the sum:
Worked example: A worked parallel circuit
A 12 V supply is connected across a 6.0 Ω resistor and a 3.0 Ω resistor in parallel. Find the combined resistance, the current in each branch and the total current.
