By the end you can derive for resistors in series using Kirchhoff's laws, and use the series formula to find a combined resistance, a current or a p.d.
The main symbols used in this lesson:
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| p.d. across the first component | |
| resistance of the third resistor |
Two components are in series when they are connected one after the other along a single path, so the same current has to pass through both of them.
That single path has two immediate consequences, and both come from Kirchhoff's laws.
Connect two resistors and in series with a source of e.m.f. . They behave like one single resistor of resistance , and here is why, step by step.
The same argument repeats for any number of resistors:
Worked example: A worked series circuit
A 12 V cell is connected to a 4.0 Ω resistor and a 6.0 Ω resistor in series. Find the combined resistance, the current, and the p.d. across each resistor.
